Hardwoods today are manufactured either as solid or as engineered construction. Solid planking comes 3/4" thick and is milled from your chosen species and topped with multiple coats of polyurethane finish and is preferred by homeowners concerned primarily with the longevity of their floors due to its ability to be sanded and refinished. Engineered hardwoods are laminated layers 'cross-grained' to each other and topped with your preferred species and multiple layers of protective polyurethane designed for structural stability countering woods' natural tendency to contract and expand with seasonal temperature changes. Engineered hardwoods are the preferred choice in applications of greater humidity and moisture particularly over concrete slab or 'below-grade' applications as well as applications where finished heights are important in transitioning to carpet, natural stone or tile.
